Gemini AI on Android: How to Set It Up and Actually Use It Productively

Google Gemini is built into Android and replaces Google Assistant as the default AI assistant on Pixel phones and newer Samsung devices. If you’re not using it beyond basic questions, you’re missing the most interesting part — its deep integration with Google’s apps. Here’s how to actually get value from it.
Setting Up Gemini as Your Default Assistant
Go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Digital Assistant App and select Gemini. On Pixel phones this may already be the default. Once set as default, the long-press on the home button or swipe from the bottom corner activates Gemini instead of Google Assistant.
Gemini in Gmail: Summarize and Draft
Open Gmail and tap the Gemini sparkle icon in the top right. You can ask it to summarize long email threads, find specific information across multiple emails, or draft a reply. ‘Summarize the key decisions from the last five emails in this thread’ or ‘Draft a professional decline to this meeting request’ are genuinely time-saving in an active inbox.
Gemini in Google Docs: Writing Assistance
In Google Docs, the Gemini sidebar (tap the sparkle icon) can proofread your document, suggest improvements, rewrite sections in a different tone, or generate new content based on your existing document’s context. It understands what’s already in your document — unlike pasting content into a separate AI chat.
Overlay Mode: AI on Top of Any App
Gemini’s overlay mode lets you activate it while viewing any app and ask questions about what’s on screen. Reading an article you don’t understand — ask Gemini to explain it. Looking at a product and want to compare prices — ask Gemini to search. Viewing a map and want restaurant recommendations nearby — ask Gemini without leaving the current app.
Gemini With Google Search and Real-Time Information
Gemini has direct access to Google Search and can provide answers with current information, not limited to a training cutoff. For questions about recent events, current prices, today’s news, or anything time-sensitive, Gemini’s search integration gives it an advantage over AI assistants that answer only from training data.
Using Gemini for Photo Analysis
Tap the image attachment option in Gemini and share any photo. Ask it to identify objects, translate text in the image, describe what it sees, or provide context. ‘What kind of plant is this?’ ‘What does this sign say?’ ‘What’s wrong with my car in this photo?’ These visual questions work reliably on clear photos.
The Gemini App vs Gemini Extensions
The standalone Gemini app handles direct AI conversations. Gemini Extensions (enabled in Gemini settings) connect it to Gmail, Drive, Docs, Maps, YouTube, and other Google services. Enable the extensions for any service you use regularly — this is where Gemini becomes significantly more useful than a generic AI chatbot.
