Most people use Google Assistant for three things: setting timers, asking the weather, and occasionally playing music. That’s like owning a car and only ever using first gear. Google Assistant can handle complex multi-step tasks, integrate with your apps, and genuinely save time — if you know how to use it.
Routines: Multiple Actions With One Command
Go to Google Home (or Google Assistant settings) > Routines and create custom sequences. For example, a Good Morning routine could read your calendar, give the weather, read news headlines, and turn on your smart lights — all triggered by saying ‘Hey Google, good morning.’ Routines transform Assistant from a one-question-one-answer tool into a genuine workflow manager.
Follow-Up Questions Without Repeating the Wake Word
After Assistant answers a question, you have a few seconds to ask a follow-up without saying Hey Google again. This enables natural conversation: ‘Hey Google, what’s the weather in Paris tomorrow?’ then immediately: ‘And what about Lyon?’ Context carries forward in the conversation.
Reading and Composing Messages
‘Hey Google, read my messages’ reads your latest WhatsApp, SMS, and other messages aloud. ‘Reply OK I’ll be there’ composes and sends a response without touching your phone. This is genuinely useful while driving or cooking. It works with WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, and SMS depending on your app permissions.
Reminders Tied to Locations and People
‘Remind me to buy milk when I’m near a supermarket’ sets a location-triggered reminder that fires when your phone detects you’re near a grocery store. ‘Remind me to ask John about the meeting when I call him next’ sets a contact-based reminder. These contextual triggers are far more effective than time-based reminders.
App-Specific Commands
Assistant integrates deeply with many apps. ‘Navigate to [address] in Waze,’ ‘Play [artist] on Spotify,’ ‘Order my usual from Starbucks,’ ‘Add a task to my Todoist.’ Many apps register their own commands with Assistant. Go to Assistant Settings > Partner Connections to see what’s integrated.
Interpreting Mode for Conversations
‘Hey Google, be my French interpreter’ activates Interpreter Mode, where Assistant listens in one language and speaks the translation aloud. This covers over 40 languages and is surprisingly accurate for practical conversations. It turns your phone into a real-time translator during travel, meetings, or encounters with speakers of other languages.
Screen Reading With Look and Talk
‘Hey Google, what’s on my screen?’ activates Assistant’s ability to read and describe what’s currently displayed — useful for reading long articles aloud, having it explain a confusing setting, or describing an image. This uses on-device processing on recent Pixel phones and sends a screenshot to Google’s servers on others.
