
GPS is one of those things that mostly works well until it doesn’t, and when it doesn’t, it’s at exactly the wrong moment — usually when you’re already running late and trying to navigate somewhere unfamiliar. Understanding why GPS goes wrong makes it much easier to fix.
How Phone GPS Actually Works
Your phone’s GPS uses signals from satellites to determine your position, but it almost never uses GPS alone. It combines satellite data with cell tower positioning, Wi-Fi network data, and sometimes Bluetooth beacons. This combination — called GNSS or Assisted GPS — is what makes location lock so fast on modern phones.
The tradeoff is that each of these data sources can be wrong in different ways. Satellite-only GPS is slow to lock but accurate once locked. Cell tower triangulation is fast but can be off by hundreds of metres. Wi-Fi positioning is accurate in urban areas but wrong when Wi-Fi mapping data hasn’t been updated. Understanding this hierarchy helps diagnose problems.
The Common GPS Problems and Their Fixes
Wrong location indoors: GPS satellite signals don’t penetrate buildings well. Indoors, your phone relies more on Wi-Fi and cell positioning, which can be wrong by significant distances in poorly mapped areas. Solution: step outside to get a proper GPS lock, then go back inside. Your phone caches the position.
Slow to lock outdoors: the phone needs to download Assisted GPS (A-GPS) data — satellite position information that speeds up lock time. If you haven’t used GPS in a while or have been in airplane mode, this data may be stale. Fix: ensure you have a data connection when starting navigation, and give it 30-60 seconds outdoors with clear sky view.
Drifting location during navigation: indicates signal interference or weak satellite signal. Common causes: tall buildings blocking signal (urban canyon effect), driving under heavy tree cover, or tunnels. Nothing you can do while in these conditions — the position snaps back when signal returns.
Consistently wrong location: the Google Maps location database for Wi-Fi networks in your area may be outdated. Toggle Wi-Fi off and try GPS-only to see if accuracy improves.
Fixes on Android
Go to Settings > Location > and verify that “Use precise location” is enabled. Also check that all three location methods are active: GPS (satellite), Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
Clear the GPS cache: Settings > Location > Google Location Accuracy > and toggle off and back on. Or install an app like “GPS Status & Toolbox” which has a specific “Download A-GPS Data” function that refreshes the satellite prediction data.
Toggle Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off. This resets all radio connections and often resolves stuck GPS that shows the wrong position.
Fixes on iPhone
Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > ensure it’s enabled. Check that the specific app you’re using has location permission.
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. This resets all location permissions and data. Apps will ask for location permission again, and the A-GPS data is refreshed.
In an area where GPS seems wrong, toggle Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services off and on.
Physical Factors That Affect GPS
Phone case: metallic cases or cases with metal plates (sometimes used for magnetic car mounts) can interfere with GPS signal. If your GPS problems started when you got a new case, test without it.
Phone position in car: suction-mount on the windscreen generally provides better GPS reception than a vent mount or dashboard mount because it’s closer to the sky.
Temperature: extreme cold temporarily reduces GPS receiver sensitivity, same as it affects all electronics. Warming the phone restores normal function.
