WhatsApp Hidden Features Most Users Have Never Tried

You’ve been using WhatsApp for years. You message, you send photos, you maybe use voice messages. But WhatsApp has a layer of features that most of its two billion users have never touched — some useful, some genuinely impressive, and some that solve problems you didn’t know could be solved this easily.

Search for Messages by Date

Open a chat, tap the three-dot menu (Android) or the contact name at the top (iPhone), and look for Search. On the search results screen, you can jump to a specific calendar date. This is a godsend if you’re trying to find something from months ago — instead of scrolling endlessly, pick the date and jump directly there.

Chat Lock for Sensitive Conversations

On Android, open a specific chat, tap the contact name, and look for Chat Lock. Enabling this moves the chat into a locked folder accessible only by fingerprint or face ID. The notifications from this chat show only a generic New Message alert without sender name or preview. Useful for private conversations when you share a device or just want extra privacy.

Send HD Photos Without Compression

By default, WhatsApp compresses images significantly. When you attach a photo, you’ll see an HD button in the corner before sending. Tap it and select HD Quality before sending. The recipient gets a much higher resolution image instead of WhatsApp’s default compressed version.

Starred Messages: Your WhatsApp Bookmarks

Long-press any message and tap the star icon to bookmark it. Access all your starred messages from any chat by going to the three-dot menu > Starred Messages. Use this to save important information — addresses, confirmation numbers, passwords, references — that you’ll need to find again quickly.

Custom Notification Tones Per Contact

Open a chat, tap the contact name, and look for Custom Notifications. Enable the custom notification option and assign a unique ringtone or notification sound to that contact. You’ll be able to identify who messaged you without looking at your phone — useful for family members, your partner, or important work contacts.

Listen to Voice Messages at 1.5x or 2x Speed

When playing a voice message, you’ll see a 1x button next to the waveform. Tap it to cycle through 1.5x and 2x speeds. If anyone in your life sends long voice messages, this feature alone will change your life. You can understand speech perfectly well at 1.5x — and 2x is surprisingly usable once you get used to it.

Transfer WhatsApp to a New Phone Without Losing Chats

WhatsApp has a built-in phone transfer feature in Settings > Chats > Move Chats to iPhone (on Android) or the equivalent option for Android transfer. It creates a direct local transfer over a temporary Wi-Fi connection, so you don’t need to rely on cloud backup. This is the fastest and most reliable way to switch devices without losing anything.

Forward Messages With Attribution

When you forward a message in WhatsApp, it shows a Forwarded label so the recipient knows it wasn’t written by you originally. You can forward up to 5 chats at once. For messages forwarded many times, WhatsApp adds a Frequently Forwarded label — this was introduced to combat misinformation spread and is worth being aware of if you’re sharing news or information.
