Despite the fact that it lacks many capabilities, the default Android alarm app is sufficient for the majority of users. However, if you are a heavy sleeper like me, you may want to replace the default alarm app on your phone with something more advanced.
Advanced wake-up features.
When an alarm goes off, most alarm applications will give you two options. You can either snooze for a short length of time or turn off the alarm completely. AMdroid includes more advanced wake-up capabilities to help you get out of bed.
For starters, you can set several tasks before you can turn off your alarm. Touching your phone to an NFC tag allows you to complete a captcha, answer a math equation or even turn off the alarm. These obstacles ensure that you get out of bed rather than pushing the snooze button and falling back asleep.
Additionally, the app provides wake-up checks. If enabled, the app will send a reminder after five minutes. If you do not respond to this notification within the specified time range, your alarm will ring again.
This eliminates the inconvenience of setting many alarms merely to get up in the morning. If you’re like me and start ignoring your alarm in the morning, you can even set a random alarm tune to play every morning.
Multiple Alarm Types
There are several methods to set up an alarm on Android’s official alarm software, but one of the most useful features of AMdroid is the ability to create various alarm types with ease.
Want to wake up later on weekends with more relaxed alarm dismissal options? Simply change a few settings on your weekend alarm. Do you have an early morning flight to catch? AMdroid’s settings ensure that your alarm goes off on schedule.
Most default alarm apps now enable you to choose which days your alarm will sound, but that’s about it for customisation. AMdroid allows you to customise your alarm settings to meet your specific waking needs.
For example, I only have two alarms configured in the app. My weekday alarm drives me to get out of bed and place my phone on the NFC tag at my desk. Meanwhile, my weekend alarms merely demand a text captcha, with no further wake-up reminders if I prefer to stay in bed.
You can set timers and countdowns, like with other alarm apps. The app also features a stopwatch, which provides more extensive information and functionality than the stock stopwatch on your phone’s clock.
More Customization and Flexibility
Alarm profiles in the app enable control over complex wake-up functions and different alarm types. These profiles provide you a lot of control and flexibility over how aggressively you want the app to wake you up in the morning. Once you’ve created an alarm profile, you can apply it to several alarms.
There are simply too many customisation choices in AMdroid’s alarm profiles to list, so here are a few of the most important.
- Alarm sound settings: covers how the alarm sound kicks in
- Custom snooze intervals
- Custom challenges for dismissing and snoozing your alarms
- Screen brightness settings when the alarm rings
- Pre- and post-alarm settings
- Custom locations to trigger alarms
- Alarm screen appearance
- Calendar and Wear OS integration settings
- Accidental dismissal protection
You can also customise other settings, such as having a Google Assistant schedule start when you turn off your alarm or having AMdroid offer you a summary of the day’s news and weather. There is almost too much customisation, so I stopped looking at these options once I had my alarms set up.
Sleep Tracking
AMdroid also includes a built-in sleep-tracking capability, although I wouldn’t expect it to track sleep accurately, especially if you have a smartwatch or smart ring that supports it.
For starters, you must manually enable sleep monitoring. It’s a simple function that merely counts the time after you enabled sleep monitoring till your alarm goes off or you manually disable it. This information is then utilised to determine sleep cycles, and the app wakes you up during light sleep intervals. When sleep monitoring is activated, the app displays a night clock, similar to the iPhone’s Standby Mode.
However, sleep tracking on phones is rarely effective since, unlike your smartwatch or smart ring, your phone lacks sensors that monitor your heart rate or other body functions and cannot automatically recognise when you fall asleep. At first, I tried using the feature on a regular basis, but it was inconvenient to manually enable and off it each time.
It’s More Reliable
Last but not least, I find AMdroid to be far more trustworthy when it comes to waking me up. I tend to sleep through alarms, and the basic alarm app on Android occasionally experiences difficulties and issues. My alarms did not always go off on time, and the volume was too low to wake me up.
Every alarm goes off on time with AMdroid, and all volume and dismissal settings are pre-programmed. This means I can rely on the app to set alarms exactly way I want them and sleep soundly without worrying about missing my alarm in the morning.
The native Android alarm software works well for basic alarms and has a few additional capabilities. However, it has limited functionality, and you may desire more if you’re seeking for a superb iOS alarm software. If you frequently miss your alarms or simply prefer a more aggressive alarm to get you up, switching to AMdroid can help.
