Why Your Android Keeps Crashing: How to Fix App Crashes for Good

Few things are more frustrating than an app that crashes every time you try to use it. It might crash immediately on launch, or it works for a minute and then suddenly closes. Either way, it disrupts whatever you were trying to do and leaves you wondering what’s wrong with your phone.

Here’s the honest answer: it’s rarely the phone itself. It’s almost always a software conflict, a cache problem, or an outdated app. And every one of those is fixable.

Clear the App’s Cache First

This is the single most effective first step for app crashes. Go to Settings > Apps > [Problematic App] > Storage > Clear Cache. The app stores temporary files as it runs, and these can become corrupted, especially after an Android update or the app’s own update. Clearing cache doesn’t delete your data or settings inside the app — it just removes temporary files. Try this first, every time.

Clear the App’s Data (More Drastic)

If clearing cache doesn’t help, go back to the same screen and tap Clear Data (or Clear Storage on newer Android). Warning: this deletes your settings and any locally stored data for that app. You’ll need to log back in. But it essentially gives the app a clean start and resolves the vast majority of persistent crash issues.

Update the App

Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, and go to Manage Apps and Device to see pending updates. If the crashing app has an update available, install it. Crashes are often caused by bugs that developers have already fixed in a newer version. Similarly, if the app updated recently and that’s when crashes started, try uninstalling and reinstalling the previous version if possible.

Check If Android Itself Needs an Update

Go to Settings > Software Update and check for system updates. Sometimes app crashes are caused by an incompatibility between the app and an outdated version of Android. Updating the OS can resolve crashes in multiple apps at once.

Uninstall and Reinstall the App

If the above steps haven’t worked, completely remove the app and reinstall it fresh. Long-press the app icon, tap Uninstall, then go to the Play Store and reinstall. This ensures you have a completely fresh installation with no corrupted files from the previous version.

Check Available Storage

If your phone’s internal storage is nearly full, apps can crash because they can’t write temporary files. Go to Settings > Storage and check how much free space you have. If you’re below 1–2 GB, free up space by deleting photos, unused apps, or clearing caches in other apps.

Boot Into Safe Mode to Identify Conflicts

Safe Mode disables all third-party apps. If your problem app stops crashing in Safe Mode, another installed app is interfering with it. Hold the power button, then long-press Power Off to enter Safe Mode (on most Samsung phones). Identify recently installed apps that might be conflicting and remove them one by one.
