Handing a child an Android phone or tablet without proper setup is handing them unsupervised internet access. The good news is Android has genuine tools for creating safe, controlled experiences for children. Here’s a complete setup guide.
Create a Child’s Google Account
Go to accounts.google.com and create a Google account for a child under 13 using the supervised account flow, or use Google Family Link to create a managed account. This creates a Google account with parental controls built in and links it to your Family Link supervision. The child signs into the Android device with their managed account, not yours.
Enable Kids Mode or Samsung Kids (Samsung Devices)
Samsung phones and tablets have a dedicated Kids Mode (Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Kids Mode or from Quick Settings). This creates a completely separate child-friendly interface with age-appropriate apps, content restrictions, usage time limits, and restricted settings access. The child can’t exit Kids Mode without the parent PIN. It’s well-designed and the easiest complete solution on Samsung devices.
Configure Family Link for App Control
In the Family Link app on your phone, go to the child’s profile > Controls > Content Restrictions > Google Play. Set the maximum app rating allowed. Enable Require Approval for all new app installations. Every app request comes to your phone for approval — you can review the app’s description, permissions, and age rating before allowing. This is the most important control for most families.
Set Screen Time Limits
Family Link > [Child’s Name] > Daily Limit. Set a daily screen time allowance and a bedtime after which the device locks. Use different limits for weekdays and weekends. When the daily limit is reached, the screen locks and only emergency calls are available. You can extend time remotely from your phone if you choose.
Content Filtering for Browsers and YouTube
In Chrome, SafeSearch is enabled automatically for supervised accounts. For YouTube, install YouTube Kids rather than standard YouTube — it has age-appropriate content filtering and no general search. Alternatively, go to YouTube Settings > General > Restricted Mode on the standard app. Set all browser content restrictions to the strictest appropriate level for your child’s age.
Educational Apps Worth Installing
Khan Academy Kids (free, ages 2-8), Duolingo for language learning, Prodigy for math, Epic for reading, and Toca Boca for creative play are all parent-trusted educational apps available on Android. For older children, Google Classroom, Quizlet, and Khan Academy (standard) provide strong academic support. Curating an app selection of genuinely educational content makes the device a learning tool rather than an entertainment distraction.
Physical and Practical Safety
Install a robust case designed for child use (OtterBox and Speck make excellent children’s cases). Enable Emergency SOS under Settings > Advanced Features so emergency calling works even if the device is locked. Teach your child never to share the device PIN with friends, never to make in-app purchases without asking, and what to do if they see something that upsets or confuses them online — come tell a trusted adult rather than trying to manage it alone.
