WhatsApp Voice and Video Calls: Tips to Improve Quality and Fix Problems

WhatsApp calls are free worldwide, which makes it remarkable technology. But poor call quality, dropped calls, and echo problems can make them frustrating. Most issues come from network conditions, settings, or device configuration — all fixable.

Enable Low Data Usage Mode for Unstable Connections

Go to WhatsApp Settings > Storage and Data > Use Less Data for Calls and enable it. This reduces audio bitrate during calls, which paradoxically improves call quality on unstable or slow connections by using less data and experiencing fewer drops. If calls regularly drop or sound choppy, this is the first setting to try.

Switch Between Wi-Fi and Mobile Data

Call quality problems are almost always network problems. If a call is poor on Wi-Fi, disable Wi-Fi and try on mobile data. If it’s poor on mobile data, switch to Wi-Fi. Sometimes one network path is congested or has high latency and the other is clear. Being connected to Wi-Fi doesn’t mean it’s the better option for real-time calls.

Fix Echo Problems

Echo on WhatsApp calls is usually caused by the other person’s phone speakers playing audio that gets picked up by their microphone. The fix is on their end: ask them to use headphones or earbuds, lower their speaker volume, or use the phone to ear instead of speakerphone. If you hear your own voice echoed back, it’s definitively their setup causing it.

Close Background Apps Before Important Calls

CPU and RAM usage from background apps can cause audio processing delays and drops during calls. Before an important WhatsApp call, close other apps in your recents and disable background sync temporarily. This is particularly important on older phones with limited RAM.

Check Microphone and Camera Permissions

If the other person can’t hear you, or your video isn’t showing, check that WhatsApp has microphone and camera permissions. Go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions and verify both are set to Allow. Also check that no other app is actively using the microphone, which can prevent WhatsApp from accessing it.

Use Group Calls Effectively

WhatsApp supports group video calls with up to 32 participants. For group calls with many people, call quality degrades as participants increase. For best results: ensure all participants are on strong Wi-Fi, use headphones to prevent echo, and on important calls keep participants to 8 or fewer for reliable quality.

Update WhatsApp for the Latest Codec Improvements

WhatsApp regularly updates its audio and video codecs, improving compression and quality. Keeping WhatsApp updated means you get these improvements automatically. If you’ve been avoiding updates, the oldest version you’re running may be using significantly inferior audio processing compared to current versions.
