Apple will not be the only smartphone manufacturer to release new models in the second half of 2022. Here’s what to look forward to from Google and Samsung’s upcoming devices.

The second half of the year is iPhone season, with the Cupertino tech giant expected to release new models in September. However, Samsung has traditionally held an event in August, whereas Google typically unveils its latest Pixel flagships in October.

Google Pixel 7 lineup is expected to be unveiled, according to industry observers. Samsung debuted new flagships earlier this year, but rumors suggest that new foldable smartphones will be released in late summer.

Here’s what you can expect.

The Google Pixel 7

Google technically announced the Pixel 7 lineup at the Google I/O 2022 conference. That, however, was more of a teaser than an actual product launch.

The company revealed few details about the new devices, but it did reveal a few renders that appear to confirm some design elements of the upcoming models.

Google Pixel 7 design and specifications

The Google Pixel 7 is expected to feature a second-generation Tensor chip, which updates the company’s in-house silicon.

Google’s Pixel 7 will have a 6.3-inch display, while the Pixel 7 Pro will have a 6.7-inch display. In terms of design, the Google Pixel 7 will keep the smartphone design language but may include a refreshed rear camera bar and front-facing cutout.

The Google Pixel 7 Pro will have three rear-facing cameras, while the Pixel 7 will only have two. The Pixel 7 could, for example, have a pill-shaped camera notch on the front, whereas the Pixel 7 Pro could have a hole-punch camera cutout.

In terms of minor updates, according to rumors, both models may support 4K video recording on their front-facing selfie cameras.

According to some reports, Google may also unveil an even higher-tier model in the lineup. It’s unclear what it’ll be called or what features it’ll have, but it could be a response to Apple’s and Samsung’s high-end flagships.

Google Pixel 7 launch date

It’s unclear when the Google Pixel 7 will be released, but a keynote event in October is likely.

Except for the Pixel 5 announcement in September 2020, Google has traditionally held a media event in October to unveil its flagship devices.

Samsung typically releases its primary iPhone competitors earlier in the year than Apple or Google, but it does have a summer event planned where new devices will be unveiled.

The South Korean smartphone manufacturer has begun to release foldable flagships in the second half of the year. It does so specifically in August.

Samsung is expected to release two major folding flagship smartphones in 2022.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 is expected to be the company’s next iteration of foldable flagships, though it will most likely only introduce incremental features.

In comparison to previous-generation Galaxy Z Fold devices, the new models are expected to have brighter and more durable displays, as well as faster charging speeds.

According to leaked renders, the device will largely retain the same design as its predecessors. The device is expected to have upgraded internals, such as a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus and 12GB of RAM.

According to current rumors, the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4’s price may be reduced. At the very least, it may maintain the pricing of the previous generation of Samsung foldable.

The smaller Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 will also be an incremental update to the company’s current smaller foldable device.

It’ll keep the same familiar form factor as the previous Flip iteration, but with a less noticeable fold crease. The new Galaxy Flip may also feature a redesigned hinge for a slimmer overall chassis.

Some rumors claim that the device will have an upgraded battery with at least a 3,700 mAh capacity. It may also include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset.

Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is expected to only improve on the product lineup. It will not be a significant redesign of the company’s compact foldable.

Release Date

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 are expected to be unveiled on August 10 at the company’s Unpacked event.

Along with the new foldable devices, Samsung is expected to unveil new accessories and smartwatches at the keynote.
