Star Fox Is Finally Returning on Nintendo Switch 2

After years of rumours, fan requests, and speculation, Nintendo has officially confirmed that a new Star Fox remake is heading to the Nintendo Switch 2. The game is scheduled to launch on June 25, 2026, bringing one of Nintendo’s most iconic franchises back into the spotlight.

The announcement came during a surprise Star Fox Direct presentation, catching many fans off guard and instantly becoming one of the gaming community’s biggest talking points this week.

A Modern Take on a Nintendo Classic

The upcoming game is described as a reimagining of Star Fox 64, one of the most beloved entries in the series. Nintendo appears to be blending nostalgia with modern gameplay improvements, while keeping the core experience familiar for longtime fans.

Players will once again join Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team as they battle across the Lylat System, but this version introduces updated visuals, redesigned characters, cinematic storytelling, and expanded gameplay features.

Nintendo reportedly calls the game “a cinematic take” on the classic formula, with fully voiced cutscenes and new mission briefings helping modernise the experience.

New Features Coming to Star Fox

The remake is not simply a visual upgrade. Nintendo is adding several new gameplay options designed to take advantage of the Switch 2 hardware.

One of the biggest additions is an online multiplayer battle mode featuring four-on-four dogfights. Players will be able to compete in different objective-based arenas, including territory control and crystal collection missions.

The game will also support:

  • Local co-op gameplay
  • GameShare support online and locally
  • Mouse-style controls using the new Joy-Con 2 features
  • Compatibility with the Nintendo 64 controller
  • Interactive avatars through GameChat

These additions suggest Nintendo wants the game to appeal to both returning fans and newer players discovering the franchise for the first time.

Why This Release Matters

The Star Fox franchise has been largely quiet for nearly a decade. The last major release, Star Fox Zero on the Wii U in 2016, received mixed reactions from fans and critics. Since then, many players have wondered whether Nintendo would ever revisit the series.

That long silence helped build anticipation around this remake. Online communities have spent years discussing rumours about a possible comeback, and reactions across gaming forums have been overwhelmingly positive since the announcement.

For Nintendo, the game could also become an important title for the Switch 2 library, especially as the company continues expanding exclusive releases for the console.

A Nostalgic Franchise With Modern Ambitions

Originally released in the 1990s, Star Fox became famous for pushing early 3D gaming technology and delivering fast-paced arcade-style space combat. The franchise helped shape Nintendo’s experimental era and introduced memorable characters that still have a loyal fanbase today.

This new remake appears to respect those roots while modernising the overall presentation. From updated graphics to expanded multiplayer modes, Nintendo seems focused on giving the franchise a fresh start without losing what made it special in the first place.
