Android has launched three innovative theft protection technologies, but only some phones are qualified.
Android is releasing three new theft protection technologies, but only specific phones will be eligible.
Google appears to be upping its game regarding device security, but only some Android users will benefit.
This week will witness the first rollouts of theft protection measures users have long waited for.
However, only a limited number of devices will receive these updates.
The function includes three primary features: theft detection lock, offline device lock, and remote lock.
Android news journalist Mishaal Rahman took to X, formerly Twitter, to provide additional details regarding the deployment.
He stated: “Google is beginning to roll out Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock to Android users in the United States!
“I just examined my Xiaomi 14T Pro and saw that I had Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, but no Remote Lock. Some Pixel users in the United States tell me they have Remote Lock but not the other two.
“Theft Detection Lock employs a machine learning algorithm to identify when someone steals your phone and attempts to flee on foot, by bike, or by automobile. If identified, your phone will automatically lock, preventing unauthorised access to your apps and data.
“Offline Device Lock will automatically lock your screen if a thief attempts to keep your phone disconnected from the Internet for an extended period of time.”
“Remote Lock allows you to remotely lock your phone using only your phone number if you are unable to sign into Find My Device with your Google account password.”
“All three features entered beta in August, beginning in Brazil. Google promised me that the final versions of these capabilities would be more widely available this year, and it appears that they have already begun to expand.”
The solutions are intended to give users more control when their cell phones are stolen, allowing them to rapidly lock down the device even if it is offline.
The Theft Detection Lock uses Google AI to identify when your device is physically removed from your hands.
This will cause the phone to lock immediately, however, Remote Lock allows you to lock your device from a distance, so even if you discover it has been taken after the event, you can still lock it down.
This is a feature that was previously available through Google’s Find My Device, but you will no longer need to enter your Google account to use it.
