Star Fox Is Finally Returning on Nintendo Switch 2

After years of rumours, fan requests, and speculation, Nintendo has officially confirmed that a new Star Fox remake is heading to the Nintendo Switch 2. The game is scheduled to launch on June 25, 2026, bringing one of Nintendo’s most iconic franchises back into the spotlight.

The announcement came during a surprise Star Fox Direct presentation, catching many fans off guard and instantly becoming one of the gaming community’s biggest talking points this week.

A Modern Take on a Nintendo Classic

The upcoming game is described as a reimagining of Star Fox 64, one of the most beloved entries in the series. Nintendo appears to be blending nostalgia with modern gameplay improvements, while keeping the core experience familiar for longtime fans.

Players will once again join Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team as they battle across the Lylat System, but this version introduces updated visuals, redesigned characters, cinematic storytelling, and expanded gameplay features.

Nintendo reportedly calls the game “a cinematic take” on the classic formula, with fully voiced cutscenes and new mission briefings helping modernise the experience.

New Features Coming to Star Fox

The remake is not simply a visual upgrade. Nintendo is adding several new gameplay options designed to take advantage of the Switch 2 hardware.

One of the biggest additions is an online multiplayer battle mode featuring four-on-four dogfights. Players will be able to compete in different objective-based arenas, including territory control and crystal collection missions.

The game will also support:

Local co-op gameplay

GameShare support online and locally

Mouse-style controls using the new Joy-Con 2 features

Compatibility with the Nintendo 64 controller

Interactive avatars through GameChat

These additions suggest Nintendo wants the game to appeal to both returning fans and newer players discovering the franchise for the first time.

Why This Release Matters

The Star Fox franchise has been largely quiet for nearly a decade. The last major release, Star Fox Zero on the Wii U in 2016, received mixed reactions from fans and critics. Since then, many players have wondered whether Nintendo would ever revisit the series.

That long silence helped build anticipation around this remake. Online communities have spent years discussing rumours about a possible comeback, and reactions across gaming forums have been overwhelmingly positive since the announcement.

For Nintendo, the game could also become an important title for the Switch 2 library, especially as the company continues expanding exclusive releases for the console.

A Nostalgic Franchise With Modern Ambitions

Originally released in the 1990s, Star Fox became famous for pushing early 3D gaming technology and delivering fast-paced arcade-style space combat. The franchise helped shape Nintendo’s experimental era and introduced memorable characters that still have a loyal fanbase today.

This new remake appears to respect those roots while modernising the overall presentation. From updated graphics to expanded multiplayer modes, Nintendo seems focused on giving the franchise a fresh start without losing what made it special in the first place.

If you’ve bought digital games on PlayStation in the past few years, there’s a chance you could be eligible for compensation. A new class-action lawsuit settlement involving Sony has opened the door for millions of users to receive refunds or credits, and it’s already drawing attention across the gaming community.

The case centers around how Sony handled digital game sales through its PlayStation Store, and whether those practices led to players paying more than they should have.

Why Sony Is Paying Millions

The lawsuit accused Sony of limiting competition by restricting where digital PlayStation games could be sold. Specifically, the company stopped third-party retailers from selling digital download codes back in 2019, which allegedly forced users to buy directly from the PlayStation Store.

Plaintiffs argued that this created a kind of monopoly, allowing Sony to keep prices higher than they might have been in a more open market.

While Sony has denied any wrongdoing, the company agreed to a settlement of about $7.85 million rather than continue a lengthy legal battle.

Who Is Eligible for a Refund?

Not every PlayStation user will qualify, but a significant number could. You may be eligible if:

You purchased certain digital games through the PlayStation Store

Your purchase was made between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023

The game was among those affected by the pricing concerns

Some of the titles mentioned in the case include popular games like The Last of Us, Call of Duty: Classic, and Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China.

The total number of eligible users is estimated to be in the millions, with earlier filings suggesting over 4 million accounts could be included in the settlement.

What Kind of Refund Will You Get?

Here’s the part that may surprise some users. Instead of direct cash payouts, many eligible players will receive compensation in the form of PlayStation Network (PSN) credits.

These credits can be used to buy games, add-ons, or other digital content on the platform. While not the same as cash, they still provide real value for active PlayStation users.

When Will Payments Be Made?

The settlement is not fully finalized yet. A court hearing is scheduled for October 15, 2026, where a judge will decide whether to give final approval and confirm how the funds will be distributed.

If approved, payments or credits will likely be issued sometime after that date.

What This Means for Gamers

This lawsuit highlights a bigger conversation happening across the gaming industry: digital ownership and pricing control. As more players shift from physical discs to digital downloads, companies have greater control over pricing and distribution.

Cases like this suggest regulators and consumers are starting to push back, especially when competition is limited.

For now, if you’ve purchased digital games on PlayStation in recent years, it’s worth keeping an eye on official updates. You might not need to do much at all, in many cases, eligible users will automatically receive their compensation unless they choose to opt out.

Microsoft continues its popular limited-time event, giving players a chance to explore a mix of action-packed, strategic, and competitive titles at no cost for a few days.

This latest lineup, running from April 30 through May 3, 2026, brings together a solid variety of games that cater to different play styles, whether you enjoy intense battles, simulation experiences, or fast-paced multiplayer fun.

At the center of this weekend’s selection is Dragon Ball FighterZ, which stands out because it’s available to all Xbox members, even without a Game Pass subscription. That makes it one of the most accessible titles in this round, letting more players jump into its high-energy anime-style combat and competitive gameplay.

Alongside it, Predator: Hunting Grounds gets extended access, allowing players to spend more time in its asymmetrical multiplayer setup where teamwork and survival are key. This extended window gives players a better feel for the game beyond a quick trial.

Also featured in the lineup are Railway Empire 2 and NBA Bounce, adding some variety to the mix. One leans into strategy and management, while the other offers a lighter, sports-inspired experience that’s easy to pick up and play.

Why Xbox Free Play Days Still Matter

What makes Free Play Days worth paying attention to isn’t just the chance to play for free. It’s the opportunity to test games before committing to a purchase. Many of the featured titles are often discounted during the same period, so if something clicks, you can grab it at a lower price and keep your progress.

This approach has become a smart way for players to discover games they might otherwise overlook. Instead of relying on trailers or reviews alone, you get hands-on experience, which is always more valuable.

A Weekend Worth Your Time

This particular lineup feels well-balanced. You’ve got a major fighting game with broad appeal, a tactical multiplayer experience, and a couple of titles that explore completely different genres. That mix keeps things fresh and gives most players at least one reason to jump in.

If you’re already part of Xbox Game Pass, you’ll have even more access during the event. But even without it, there’s still something here worth trying.

Final Thoughts

Xbox Free Play Days continues to be one of the easiest ways to explore new games without risk. The April 30 to May 3 selection keeps that tradition going with a strong mix of genres and accessibility.

If you’ve got some free time this weekend, it’s a good chance to download something new, experiment a bit, and maybe find your next favorite game without spending anything upfront.

Apple appears to be taking a serious step forward with its upcoming flagship, as reports suggest that the camera components for the iPhone 18 Pro have officially moved into active production. While the device itself is still some time away from launch, this development gives a clearer picture of where Apple is heading with smartphone photography.

The iPhone has always been known for pushing camera innovation, and this next generation looks set to continue that trend. With suppliers now beginning mass production of key camera parts, it signals that Apple has finalised major elements of the iPhone 18 Pro’s imaging system. This stage is important because it usually happens when a design is locked in and ready for large-scale manufacturing.

One of the most talked-about upgrades is the potential introduction of a variable aperture system. Unlike traditional smartphone cameras that use a fixed aperture, this technology allows the lens to adjust how much light enters the sensor. In practical terms, that means better photos in both bright and low-light conditions, along with improved depth-of-field control for more natural background blur.

There are also strong indications that Apple is working on improving sensor technology. Larger or more advanced sensors could capture more detail and reduce noise, especially in challenging lighting environments. Some reports even suggest a possible upgrade to the front-facing camera, potentially increasing resolution and enhancing video quality for calls and content creation.

Beyond hardware, these changes reflect a broader strategy. Apple is not just refining its cameras but building a long-term roadmap for imaging improvements across future iPhones. The iPhone 18 Pro could be the starting point for a multi-year evolution in camera technology, with each generation building on the last.

What makes this development particularly interesting is the timing. Moving into active production well ahead of launch suggests Apple is confident in its direction. It also hints that the company is prioritising camera performance as a key selling point, especially as competition in the smartphone market continues to intensify.

For everyday users, these upgrades could translate into more flexibility when taking photos. Whether it’s capturing clearer night shots, achieving professional-looking portraits, or recording sharper video, the improvements are expected to be noticeable rather than incremental.

The iPhone has come a long way since its debut in 2007, evolving from a simple smartphone into a powerful creative tool used by millions around the world. With the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple seems ready to push that evolution even further, focusing heavily on the camera as the centrepiece of the experience.

While full details will only be confirmed closer to launch, one thing is already clear. Apple is investing heavily in camera technology, and the iPhone 18 Pro could mark the beginning of a new era for mobile photography.

Valve has officially introduced its latest gaming hardware, the Steam Controller, marking an important step in the company’s expanding ecosystem. However, while the controller is ready for release, its companion device — the highly anticipated Steam Machine — is still facing delays.

The new controller is scheduled to go on sale on May 4, 2026, with a retail price of $99. Notably, Valve is launching the controller independently, rather than waiting for the full hardware lineup to be ready.

This move highlights a shift in strategy, allowing gamers to experience the controller without being tied to the delayed console.

A Standalone Launch Strategy

Originally, the Steam Controller was designed to work closely with the Steam Machine and other upcoming Valve hardware. However, due to ongoing global supply challenges — particularly affecting memory and storage components — the company has had to adjust its rollout plans.

Despite these setbacks, the controller is fully functional as a standalone device. It works with PCs, laptops, and even mobile devices running Steam, making it a versatile option for gamers who want flexibility in how they play.

This compatibility ensures that users don’t need to wait for additional hardware to take advantage of Valve’s latest innovation.

Why the Steam Machine Is Delayed

The delay of the Steam Machine is largely tied to the global memory shortage that has impacted the wider tech industry. Rising costs and limited availability of RAM have made it difficult for manufacturers, including Valve, to finalise pricing and production timelines.

Reports indicate that memory prices have surged significantly, forcing companies to rethink both hardware pricing and release schedules.

Valve has confirmed that development is still ongoing, but the company has yet to provide a firm release date for the Steam Machine. While expectations remain set for a 2026 launch window, uncertainty still surrounds the exact timing.

Early Impressions of the Steam Controller

Initial reactions to the Steam Controller have been largely positive. Reviewers have highlighted its ability to bring the familiar feel of PC gaming controls into a more traditional gamepad format.

The design takes inspiration from the Steam Deck, offering customisable controls and improved ergonomics. This makes it particularly appealing for players who want a console-like experience while maintaining the flexibility of PC gaming.

However, some features — such as deeper integration with upcoming hardware — could not be fully tested due to the absence of the Steam Machine.

What This Means for Gamers

For gamers, the early release of the Steam Controller presents an opportunity to adopt new hardware without waiting for the entire ecosystem to launch. It also reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry, where companies release products in phases rather than as a complete bundle.

While the Steam Machine delay may be disappointing to some, it also suggests that Valve is prioritising quality and market readiness over rushing products to market.

Looking Ahead

Valve remains committed to releasing its full lineup of hardware, including the Steam Machine and other devices, once supply challenges stabilise. In the meantime, the Steam Controller serves as a preview of what the company is building — a more connected and flexible gaming experience.

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, Valve’s approach may prove to be a smart way of adapting to global production challenges while still delivering value to players.

Apple has once again issued an urgent security warning to iPhone users, following the release of its latest updates, iOS 26.4.2 and iOS 18.7.8. While these updates may appear minor at first glance, they address a serious privacy flaw that has raised concerns across the tech world—and users are being strongly advised to install them without delay.

Why this iPhone update matters right now

Unlike feature-packed updates that introduce new tools or visual changes, this release is focused almost entirely on security. According to reporting by Forbes, the urgency stems from a vulnerability that could allow sensitive data—thought to be deleted—to remain accessible on a device.

In simple terms, certain notifications were not being fully erased from the system, even after users deleted them. That might sound harmless, but in practice it created a loophole where private information could still be recovered.

The privacy flaw explained in human terms

Modern smartphones store far more than what you see on the screen. Behind the scenes, systems log activity to keep apps running smoothly. In this case, those logs were holding onto notification data longer than they should.

This meant that even if a message disappeared—such as those from secure messaging apps—it could still leave traces behind. Reports indicate that this weakness was significant enough to be used in real-world investigations, where deleted messages were recovered through the device’s internal notification database.

That’s not just a technical oversight—it’s a privacy risk.

What Apple has fixed

With iOS 26.4.2 and iOS 18.7.8, Apple has corrected how the system handles deleted notifications. The update ensures that when something is removed, it is no longer quietly stored in the background.

The fix also reduces the chances of sensitive data being accessed through forensic tools or malicious software. Importantly, there are no flashy changes here—just stronger protection where it matters most.

Who needs to update?

If you own an iPhone, the short answer is: you do.

Whether you are using the latest version of iOS 26 or have stayed on iOS 18, Apple has released patches for both paths. This dual release is particularly important because many users delay major upgrades but still need protection from emerging threats.

How to update your iPhone safely

Updating your device is straightforward and only takes a few minutes:

Open Settings

Tap General

Select Software Update

Download and install the latest version

It is best to connect to Wi-Fi and ensure your battery is sufficiently charged before starting the update.

The bigger picture: why security updates shouldn’t be ignored

It’s easy to overlook small updates, especially when they don’t promise new features. However, security patches like this one often address vulnerabilities that are already known—or worse, already being exploited.

Cybersecurity experts frequently warn that delays in updating devices create an unnecessary window of risk. Even if you don’t consider yourself a target, vulnerabilities don’t discriminate—they exist until they are patched.

Final thoughts

This latest warning is a reminder that digital privacy is not just about apps or passwords, but also about the invisible systems running underneath your device.

By installing iOS 26.4.2 or iOS 18.7.8, you are closing a gap that could otherwise expose personal information you believed was gone for good.

In a world where data security is increasingly under scrutiny, keeping your iPhone updated is one of the simplest—and most effective—steps you can take to stay protected.

Introduction

Xbox Game Pass has long been considered one of the best-value subscriptions in gaming. But recent developments suggest that even Microsoft is rethinking that position. A leaked internal memo has revealed concerns about pricing, signalling potential changes ahead for the popular service.

Microsoft Acknowledges Pricing Issues

According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft’s new Xbox leadership admitted internally that Game Pass has “become too expensive for players.” This statement reflects growing concerns about whether the current pricing model still delivers strong value.

The memo highlights that while Game Pass remains central to Xbox’s long-term strategy, the current cost may no longer align with user expectations.

What Led to the Price Concerns?

Several factors appear to have contributed to the rising cost of the subscription:

Recent price increases: The Game Pass Ultimate tier reportedly jumped significantly, reaching around $29.99 per month.

High-profile game additions: Popular titles, including major franchises such as Call of Duty, have been added to the service, thereby increasing operational costs.

Expanding ecosystem: The service now includes cloud gaming, PC access, and a broader game library, which adds to its overall value—but also its cost.

While these improvements were meant to enhance the offering, they may have unintentionally pushed the price beyond what many players consider affordable.

Plans for a More Flexible Game Pass

Microsoft is reportedly exploring ways to improve the “value equation” of Game Pass. This could involve:

Introducing more flexible subscription tiers

Offering lower-cost plans with limited features

Adjusting bundled content or game availability

The company is not expected to make immediate changes, but internal discussions suggest that updates are being actively considered.

Could Game Pass Become Cheaper?

Although no official price cuts have been announced, there is speculation that Microsoft may restructure the service rather than simply reduce prices. Some reports suggest that certain premium titles could be removed or separated into different tiers to balance costs.

This approach would allow Microsoft to maintain profitability while still appealing to a broader audience.

Community Reactions and Industry Impact

The discussion around Game Pass pricing is not limited to Microsoft. Many gamers have already expressed concerns about affordability, especially after recent price hikes.

Online discussions show that some users are reconsidering subscriptions in favour of purchasing games individually, particularly during sales. This shift highlights a key challenge for subscription-based gaming services: maintaining perceived value over time.

What This Means for Gamers

For players, these developments could lead to:

More affordable subscription options

Greater choice in how they access games

Potential changes in which titles are included

Ultimately, Microsoft appears to be aiming for a balance between accessibility and sustainability.

Conclusion

The leaked memo reported by The Verge reveals a significant moment for Xbox Game Pass. Even as the service continues to grow, pricing concerns are forcing a reevaluation of its structure.

If Microsoft successfully adjusts its strategy, Game Pass could evolve into a more flexible and user-friendly platform. For now, gamers can expect ongoing discussions—and possibly meaningful changes—in the near future.

Google agreed to a $135 million class action settlement to resolve allegations that it utilised Android devices to relay information to Google without user permission, thereby using cellular data.

The Google class action settlement benefits consumers who have used Android-powered mobile devices to access the internet via cellular data networks since November 12, 2017.

According to the class action lawsuit, Google’s Android operating system caused smartphones to send information to Google without the user’s permission. The transfers apparently occurred in the background, even while the devices were idle or not in use.

The plaintiffs in the complaint claim that Google could have made these transfers only when devices were connected to Wi-Fi, but instead decided to use cellular data. This unauthorised use of cellular data allegedly breached the law, forcing Google to pay users for cellular data used for its own profit.

Google has not admitted any wrongdoing, but has reached a $135 million class action settlement to resolve the allegations.

According to the terms of the Google settlement, class members may receive a cash reward. The exact payment amounts will vary depending on the number of participants in the class and how much each class member paid for cellular data while using Android devices.

According to the settlement website, there are almost 100 million class members. Each class member is expected to receive the same amount from the settlement fund, but exact payment amounts are not currently available.

If any funds remain in the settlement after distribution, the settlement administrator may transfer them among class members who have already been paid successfully. If redistribution is not economically viable, the cash will be allocated to a court-approved group. No remaining monies will be returned to Google.

The settlement also includes non-monetary advantages. Google will amend the Google Play Terms of Service, a page in Google’s Help Center, and the setup screens that Android users see during device setup. These updates will reveal the conduct at issue in the complaint and urge users to consent. Google will also turn off a related setting on Android smartphones.

The deadline to exclude and object to the class action settlement is May 29, 2026.

The final approval hearing for the Google deal is set for June 23, 2026.

The settlement does not require the submission of a claim form. Class members who do not opt out will automatically receive settlement rewards. Class participants who want to receive their payment by direct deposit or another way must choose their chosen payment method on the settlement website.

Who is eligible?

The class action settlement benefits anyone who are not class members in a related complaint, Csupo v. Google LLC, and have used an Android-powered mobile device with a cellular data plan to access the internet since November 12, 2017.

Apple’s new AI and Siri strategy demonstrates the company’s commitment to its basic business model: selling hardware and services. Also, Apple discontinues the Mac Pro in favour of the Mac Studio and offers iPhone designers bonuses to counteract OpenAI poaching.

Last week on Power On, Apple’s AirPods Max 2 headphones blurred the distinction between marketing and innovation.

The Starters

Apple Inc. understands that its own artificial intelligence technology lags behind ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic, and other platforms. And, with its competitors gaining ground at rapid pace, Apple will not be recognised as an AI leader in the near future.

That fact is inspiring the company’s new strategy, which will be announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8. Rather than engaging in an AI arms race, Apple is focusing on its core competencies: selling extremely profitable hardware and profiting from the services that run on it.

Historically, Apple’s software — such as iMessage, Maps, and Photos — has been designed to drive device sales rather than generate revenue on its own. In contrast, competitors are aggressively monetising AI via subscriptions and premium apps. Apple realises that few, if any, people will pay for Siri or its other artificial intelligence capabilities. The time to convert Apple Intelligence into a moneymaker has now passed.

Instead, Apple is adopting a two-pronged strategy: incorporating just enough AI within its operating systems to dissuade people from switching to Android, while also exposing Siri and Apple Intelligence to third-party businesses. This strategy exploits Apple’s hardware, increases product customisation, and maintains the corporation in control of its ecosystem.

The impending iOS 27 Extensions feature, which will allow users to install and operate third-party AI chatbots other than ChatGPT inside Siri, is a key component of this plan. This functionality will have its own dedicated App Store area, thus creating an AI App Store. It will essentially function as a marketplace for third-party AI integrations.

A separate endeavour to improve Siri and other AI capabilities using Google’s Gemini technology enables Apple to provide usable and capable in-house technologies. However, the next important step is to supplement those capabilities with third-party products. Apple can continue iPhone and other device sales while still making cash from AI-driven apps, thanks to the App Store’s 30% fee.

Apple will continue to require its own services, both for marketing purposes and to deliver a usable out-of-the-box iPhone experience. It’s the same strategy Apple has taken with built-in apps for years: make its offerings usable even if they lag behind competitors. Furthermore, the company requires in-house technology to enable the introduction of additional device categories such as high-end AirPods, smart glasses, a pendant, and smart home goods. Delays with the new Siri have hampered some of these efforts.

Apple’s artificial intelligence software may still be mediocre, but its chips and hardware support AI well in general. This dynamic indicates that the company’s future will most likely be based on hardware, rather than AI software and advanced massive language models. It also strengthens the case for John Ternus, Apple’s chief of hardware engineering, as a likely successor to CEO Tim Cook. At this point, a hardware expert may be more appropriate than someone capable of leading an AI software effort.

Unlike previous initiatives to compete in music, communications, TV, and maps (where the business remains competitive), Apple has effectively conceded the AI race. That means not building a major competitor while allowing third parties to innovate. The corporation had little choice. It was caught off guard by ChatGPT in 2022 and lost AI talent to OpenAI, Meta Platforms Inc., Google, and Anthropic PBC.

Nonetheless, it has a potentially successful path – even if the firm stumbled into it. The closest historical counterpart is Apple’s App Store, which provides in-house software while allowing customers to install third-party alternatives and gets a portion of the revenue. Many consumers remain with Apple’s settings, while many others prefer more advanced options, such as maps, email, and browser software.

However, AI differs. It’s much more fundamental, bringing this approach closer to the inconceivable situation of allowing competing operating systems to run on Apple devices. Some Apple executives and observers have attempted to compare AI to online search, claiming that the firm can thrive without owning it. However, that analogy is incomplete: search is a destination, whereas AI is evolving into the next-generation operating system.

Still, Apple has little alternative but to adopt app and search-like techniques. With iOS 27 and the new Siri Extensions, Apple indicates that it will not actively compete with OpenAI or Google in the market for the most advanced models and features. Instead, it will use its hardware dominance and platform control to remain a tremendously lucrative corporation, while allowing others to bear the burden of AI innovation.

The Mac Pro had already died. Apple has officially made it official. The slow decline of the Mac Pro began in 2022, when Apple shelved plans for a high-end CPU with twice as many processing cores as its Ultra components. Without that high-end processor, the Mac Pro lost its sole purpose, especially when the Mac Studio — smaller, cheaper, quieter, and more practical — already covered the same area.

Nonetheless, Apple had pledged to moving the Mac Pro into the era of in-house silicon (the previous version still used Intel CPUs), so it released an unimpressive M2 Ultra model in 2023, along with a Mac Studio with identical features. Apple’s marketing at the time emphasised that every Mac Pro came with an M2 Ultra, although this didn’t hold much weight given that the cheaper Mac Studio had the same processor.

Other aspects of the Mac Pro made it difficult to sell. It was about three times the volume of the Mac Studio and cost $3,000 more, with prices starting at $6,999. The approach to expansion also felt dated: there were PCIe slots for networking and audio cards, but no support for updating the components that are most important in modern workflows, like as memory and graphics.

By last year, these flaws had become impossible to overlook. The Mac Studio with the M3 Ultra pulled ahead due to improved performance, more memory capacity, and substantially higher storage ceilings. Notably, the Mac Pro did not receive any updates. Simply swapping in new chips (something Apple appears to do ten times per year across other product lines) was evidently too much of a lift.

Apple also paved the path for the Mac Pro’s discontinuation in other ways. That included the news last month that the Mac mini would be manufactured in Houston. The Mac Pro was the company’s only domestically built computer, therefore Apple was able to escape headlines claiming that it killed its only made-in-America product.

Even before the latest incident, the Mac Pro had a turbulent history. Apple harmed the product’s attractiveness in 2013 with the “trash can” redesign, a thermally limited experiment that stalled major improvements for years. In 2017, the corporation took an unprecedented move by admitting its mistake. It eventually produced a well-received new Mac Pro in 2019, presenting it as a fresh start with the promise of regular updates. So much for it.

Apple offers bonuses to iPhone product design engineers in an attempt to discourage them from leaving for OpenAI. The company’s leadership have become increasingly dissatisfied in recent months as a result of defections to OpenAI. The startup’s hardware section, overseen by former Apple design chief Evans Hankey and senior engineering leader Tang Tan, has actively recruited from the iPhone maker’s engineering ranks.

OpenAI has ambitious plans for AI-powered devices, with former Apple design guru Jony Ive assisting with the items’ look and feel. Since last year, the ChatGPT maker has recruited several dozen Apple engineers who had previously worked on the iPhone, Vision Pro headset, audio technology, and practically every other aspect of the company’s hardware and design operations.

From a legal sense, Apple has no power to stop this. So the corporation is attempting a different strategy: retention. Apple has began to award significant out-of-cycle bonuses to key iPhone product designers, ranging from $200,000 to $400,000 with a four-year vesting period.

The difficulty is that OpenAI is willing to go considerably further, providing equity packages worth millions each year. Apple has the resources to compete at that level, but has previously decided not to.

Internally, there is more anxiety about a cultural shift. Some engineers believe that the most intriguing and forward-thinking work is taking place elsewhere, at OpenAI and fledgling firms such as Hark. Apple is perceived, properly or not, as reflecting the past. This is a difficult perception to change.

To be fair, Apple is creating its own AI-powered hardware, and it has a long history of entering markets late and succeeding. The corporation could quickly follow any breakthrough gadget, and its vertically integrated strategy should give it an advantage even if Apple’s AI isn’t superior.

Still, this is an important time for Apple to demonstrate that it is still relevant, particularly as the firm approaches its 50th anniversary. Previously, engineers would accept lower salary in exchange for the opportunity to work there. For many, that era has long passed.

Sony announced Friday that it will hike pricing on its flagship PlayStation 5 systems for the second time in less than a year, blaming “pressures in the global economic landscape.”

In the United States, the PS5 disc edition will cost $649.99, up $100 from the previous time Sony raised the console’s costs last year. The device’s digital variant will likewise be priced $100 higher at $599.99. Sony’s most powerful console, the PS5 Pro, is now priced at $899.99, up $150.

The pricing increases take effect on April 2.

“We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide,” the company wrote on its blog.

Sony boosted global prices last year amidst persistently high inflation and uncertainty prompted by US tariffs.

The company is currently dealing with an unusual spike in memory prices. Memory is a critical component of the PS5, and costs have risen dramatically as memory manufacturers allocate their stock to meet high demand from AI data centers, while supply remains tight.

Sony also boosted prices for the console in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Europe. In the United Kingdom, each PS5 model will cost £90 (about $120).

‘Inevitable’ price increases?

Piers Harding-Rolls, research director of games at Ampere Analysis, told CNBC that pricing increases were unavoidable given the growth in memory prices.

“It is likely that Sony had price protections for its components for a set period and this may well have come to an end,” according to Harding-Rolls.

“With no signs of price reductions, Sony will have made the decision to safeguard its thin hardware margins. It would be unsurprising if Microsoft and Nintendo followed suit in the near future.

So far, Nintendo has kept prices stable for its flagship Switch 2 console, which was only released last year.

“It’s awkward for Nintendo as it won’t want to raise the price of the Switch 2 when it is trying to establish the new platform,” Harding-Rolls told reporters.

During an earnings call in February, a Sony executive stated that the company intends to mitigate the impact of rising memory costs by focusing on monetising its existing PS5 install base and boosting its software and network service income.

The war in the Middle East could put more pressure on component prices, according to Harding-Rolls.

“A new wave of inflation is expected from the war in the Middle East, and this will compound the effect of the component price increases,” according to Harding-Rolls.
